"The festival has been decided upon because the Committee of Management feels that our contribution to the world of theatre is by means of giving opportunities which would not occur to new playwrights to see their work tried out, and also to producers and designers to attempt new approaches to old problems. We make no excuse for this. It is what we are here for.
"So those of you who like your cream cakes in a little paper cup on a nice prim china plate will be able to stay at home. We are going to hurl the cream cakes at the wall; sometimes it's much more satisfactory that way."
