JEFF BAYNHAM [1956-2026]
The Questors was deeply saddened by the sudden death of Jeff Baynham in June 2026, aged seventy.
Jeff had already accumulated considerable theatrical experience before joining The Questors in 2008. A long-standing member of the Chiltern Shakespeare Company, he appeared in many of Shakespeare’s great roles, including Macbeth, Shylock, Sir Toby Belch, Prospero, Lord Capulet, Oberon and King Duncan.
Jeff made his first appearance for The Questors as Lucifer in Doctor Faustus
in February 2011, bringing a suitably sinister authority to the role. Later that year he played the formidable title role in Titus Andronicus
(2011). Further appearances included Business (2012), Educating Rita (2013)
, Mary Stuart
(2013), Endgame (2017) and The Tenth Rose Plant (Questival II 2018).
Acting, however, was only part of Jeff’s contribution. He gave many hours of practical assistance in the scenery workshop and worked on numerous productions and student shows. Members remember him as one of the theatre’s invaluable and often unsung backstage workers: skilled, dependable and always willing to help.
Proud of his Welsh roots, Jeff was a warm, gentle and engaging man, with a love of language, an inventive sense of humour and a fund of fascinating conversation. Whether performing, working in the workshop or talking with friends over a drink, he brought kindness and individuality to everything he did.
Jeff will be greatly missed by his many friends at The Questors.

Jananne and I were deeply shocked and saddened to hear the news of our friend Jeff’s recent death. We were hoping he would come to visit our new home on the East Kent coast as I know how much he was excited for us. One of the last WhatsApp messages I received from Jeff read: ‘Much laverbread on the lolly under the beach brolly ☀️’ - which about sums up his Celtic spirit, his love of word play, his warm-heartedness.
I directed Jeff in Questors shows on two occasions, three including Under Milk Wood last year from which Jeff unfortunately had to withdraw due to ill health. I’d cast him as Captain Cat, a part for which he was surely made. In Dr Faustus, Jeff played Lucifer to sinister effect and in Endgame Nagg. He excelled in both, his enjoyment of Marlowe’s and Beckett’s language always to the fore often to the extent I’d have to remind him (as so many actors need reminding, myself included) that ‘less = more’. Endgame is an especially difficult play but the cast of Paul Collins, Julian Smith, Mary Davies and— not least of all—Jeff himself were pitch perfect.
Whether over drinks in the pub, genealogical discussions with Jananne (who conducted extensive research into the Baynham family history on Jeff's behalf), chats on the phone or via WhatsApp, Jeff was charming and entertaining company. I’ll miss his kindly, grizzled face, his battered leather Stetson, his kindness.
Good guys are pretty hard to come by. Jeff was one of them.
